Woman Dies by Suicide, Young Man Stabbed to Death in Southern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 23-year-old woman died by suicide and a young man was stabbed to death in separate incidents in southern Kandahar province on Thursday, in the latest reported cases of suicide and violent crime in Afghanistan.

According to local sources, the woman died in Kandahar’s Dand district after leaving her husband’s home about five months ago due to domestic violence. She had since been living with her father.

Local Taliban authorities have not commented on her death.

In a separate incident, a young man identified as Masoom was stabbed to death by his friends in Spin Boldak district, sources said.

According to the sources, Masoom left his home after receiving a phone call from his friends. He was attacked with knives shortly after leaving and died from his injuries.

The Taliban’s police command in Kandahar confirmed the killing but did not provide further details. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

These two cases are part of a growing pattern of violent crimes, domestic abuse, and mysterious killings across Afghanistan. Human rights groups and residents say such incidents have increased since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, with women remaining particularly vulnerable. Reports indicate that perpetrators often act with impunity due to weak law enforcement and inconsistent investigations.
