Afghanistan pilgrims among 16 dead in road crash in Iraq

A deadly road crash killed at least 16 pilgrims, including those from Afghanistan, in the north of Iraq’s capital Baghdad.

The Iranian state news agency IRNA said that the accident took place on Friday between Kazmain and Samarra route when two vehicles collided also wounding ten people.

Some of the injured remain in critical condition, IRNA added.

Another source indicated that 19 people lost their lives in the crash, among them 12 Irani nationals, four from Afghanistan and three from Iraq.

The source added that of the 11 injured, seven are identified from Iran and four from Afghanistan.

Further information on the circumstances of the crash remains unclear.

Every year, millions of Shia pilgrims travel to the Iraqi city of Karbala for Arbaeen, one of the world’s biggest religious gatherings.
