Sources: Taliban detains and extorts people in Samangan province

According to sources in the Dara-i Sufi Bala district of Samangan province, the Taliban has been ramping up pressure on residents to provide weapons and money, causing tensions in the area.

Residents of Kota and Chardeh villages who spoke to KabulNow said local Taliban officials are subjecting them to interrogations and harassment, and demanding money and weapons.

Mohammad Mohaqiq, the leader of the People’s Islamic Unity Party, who has been living in Turkey since the Taliban’s takeover, has denounced the group’s actions, accusing it of mass detention, murder, and extortion.

According to locals, the group has detained relatives of the former governor of Bamiyan, Tahir Zahir, in Dara-i-Suf Bala.
