Gunmen Assassinate Religious Scholar in Kabul

Unknown gunmen have shot dead a religious scholar and a worshiper when the two left a mosque after a morning prayer in Karte Naw neighborhood of Kabul city, the Taliban police in Kabul confirmed.

Spokesman for Taliban police in Kabul, Khalid Zadran, identified the religious scholar as Qari Najibullah Azizi who was the imam or worship leader of Abubakr Sediq Mosque in the neighborhood. Azizi was targeted by unknown gunmen while returning from the mosque to his home on Thursday morning, November 17, according to Zadran.

The Taliban police spokesman confirmed that Azizi and a worshiper were killed in the attack.

He said that the Taliban police have already started investigating the case, adding that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghanistan has seen a dramatic rise in cases of targeted attacks against religious scholar in its different parts ever since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
