Armed Robbers Kill Teacher, Steal Cash and Gold in Eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Armed robbers shot and killed a teacher and stole cash and gold from his home in Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province, the Taliban-controlled provincial police command said, amid rising reports of armed robberies and violent crimes across the country.

The victim, identified as Mohammad Aref, was killed on Monday night, November 2, after several armed men entered his home in the Zarghun Shahr area of Mohammad Agha district and shot him dead, according to the provincial police command.

The robbers fled with 142,000 Afghanis, $900 and 350 euros, worth approximately $3,500 in total, as well as an unspecified amount of gold, the authorities said.

The Taliban police command said two people had been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killing and robbery.

The killing comes amid reports of a rise in armed robberies, violent crimes and targeted attacks in several provinces in recent weeks. Such incidents have raised concerns about public safety and the security situation across the country.

The Taliban authorities, who claim to have restored nationwide security since returning to power in August 2021, continue to face criticism over their ability to protect civilians and the transparency of their investigations into criminal incidents.
