KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Two people were killed in separate incidents in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, including a teenager who died by suicide and a man who was killed by his son, Taliban authorities said on Tuesday.
The incidents took place in Dara-e Noor district of Nangarhar, according to Sayed Tayeb Hamad, spokesperson for the Taliban’s police command in the province.
Hamad said in a statement that the teenager hanged himself after a verbal dispute with members of his family. He did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the dispute or identify the teenager.
In a separate incident in the same district, a young man shot and killed his father following a verbal dispute, Hamad said. He did not disclose the identities of the two people involved or provide details about the motive.
The Taliban police command said investigations into both incidents have begun.
Reports of killings, suicides and other violent incidents, including mysterious killings, continue to emerge from different parts of Afghanistan on a daily basis, highlighting the persistence of violence and other forms of insecurity across the country.
Poverty, unemployment, mental health problems and domestic violence are among factors cited by rights groups and activists as contributing to violence and suicide in Afghanistan.
