KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Two Afghan nationals were killed and 10 others injured when a vehicle carrying them overturned in Iran’s Kerman province on Monday, Iranian media reported.
The Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), citing Reza Fallah, head of the Kerman Red Crescent Society, said the incident took place in the Jupar-Baghin area of the province on Monday morning, August 31.
The bodies of the two dead were handed over to the relevant authorities, while the injured were transferred to medical facilities, according to the report.
Iranian authorities have not released further details on the cause of the accident or the identities of those killed and injured.
The crash is the latest in a series of road accidents and other deadly incidents in recent months that have claimed the lives of Afghan migrants in Iran or along routes toward the country.
Many Afghans, facing widespread poverty, unemployment and strict visa requirements, turn to irregular and risky migration routes. Along these routes, migrants have repeatedly died in traffic accidents, been killed in shootings by Iranian border guards, or perished from dehydration, hunger or extreme heat in desert areas near the Iran-Afghanistan border, particularly in Afghanistan’s western Nimroz province.
In November 2025, at least 13 Afghan nationals were killed and seven others injured after a vehicle carrying them veered off the road and overturned in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province. In late June 2026, the bodies of at least 19 Afghan nationals were found in a remote desert area between Helmand and Nimroz provinces after they went missing while attempting to reach Iran. Taliban authorities said the group died from extreme weather, hunger and dehydration.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), about 8 million Afghans have left the country since 2020, including around 1 million who reached Europe, most via irregular routes. The agency has documented at least 5,046 Afghan migrant deaths since 2014, many occurring along border crossings following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
