Taliban Minister of Refugees Killed in Suicide Attack in Kabul, Sources Confirm

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN –  Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, the Taliban Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, was among several people killed in a suicide attack at the ministry on December 11, local sources confirmed.

Sources told KabulNow that the suicide attack took place around 2:00 pm local time inside a mosque at the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation, killing at least five, including Haqqani, and injuring several others.

The Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the attack and the killing of their senior official.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet; however, previous similar attacks were claimed by ISKP, the regional affiliate of ISIS.

Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, a senior Taliban official and uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban Interior Minister and leader of the Haqqani network, was appointed as the Taliban Minister of Refugee and Repatriation in August 2021, following the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan.

He was designated as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” by the US Department of the Treasury in 2011, and the US State Department offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
