Led by Ahmad Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the NRF has been fighting against the Taliban in the Panjshir and neighbouring provinces. It is the main armed group active against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Taliban has faced widespread accusations of detaining, torturing, and summarily executing both NRF members and civilians in Panjshir and other areas.
