Taliban shot dead deminers

Local official: Taliban shot dead 11 deminers in Baghlan

The Taliban militants have shot dead at least 10 deminers and wounded 16 others in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the northern Baghlan province, a local source claimed.

Jawid Basharat, spokesperson for Baghlan police, said the Taliban launched their attacks on HALO Trust Landmines Clearance Company in Sher Jalal area yesterday evening, Tuesday,  June 08. The Taliban first detained 100 employees in one of the company’s room and then started shooting at them, he detailed the attack.

Many employees of the demining company managed to escape, he added.

The wounded deminers have already been transferred to provincial hospital in Pul e Khumri, capital of the province, for medical treatment.

The Taliban however denied the attack.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesperson, condemned the attack on civilians and called it a brutality. In a tweet posted today on Wednesday, June 09, he said, “We have normal relations with NGOs, our Mujahidin will never carry out such brutal acts.”

Located in northern part of the country, Baghlan is a volatile province where the militants control swathes of territory, including large areas in Baghlan-e-Markazi district.
