Two people, including the director of the procurement department at the Ministry of Education and the head of Waris Seyar company, were arrested on charges of corruption, said Afghanistan’s Attorney General Office (AGO) today, Monday, February 22.
The individuals were arrested after an investigation by Anti-Corruption Justice Center (ACJC) reported their crime, said a statement issued by the AGO.
The director of the procurement department in collusion with the head of Waris Seyar company bought a second-hand generator smuggled into the country.
Najiba Arian, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education, confirmed the case but she did not provide details.
On February 20, 10 employees of the customs and traffic departments were arrested on charges of corruption cases.
This is while two general directors along with ten employees of the Ministry of Urban Development and Land were arrested on charges of embezzlement and abuse of authority on February 20.
According to Tariq Arian, MoI Spokesperson, they were arrested in an operation conducted by the MoI’s anti-crime police forces. He detailed that the two senior officials were working as General Director of Finance and Administrative Affairs and General Director of Procurement at the Ministry of Urban Development and Land. He added that the police’s findings suggest the arrested officials and employees have embezzled millions of afghanis from the Ministry’s contracts.
