Five policemen killed in southern Afghanistan

As many as four policemen were killed when their outpost came under Taliban attack in Maiwand district of the southern Kandahar province, local security authorities told Kabul Now on Saturday, August 08.

Jamal Nasir Barikzai, spokesperson for Kandahar governor, confirmed that the Taliban fighters launched an attack late on Friday night, August 07, in Qala-e-Shahmir area of Maiwand district.   

The Taliban fighters were pushed back after hours of fighting, according to Mr. Barikzai.

In a separate incident, a policeman was killed in a magnetic mine explosion in the southern Ghazni province. Wahidullah Jumazada, spokesperson for Ghani governor, told Kabul Now that the incident occurred at around 12:00 PM, today, Saturday, August 08, in Ghazni city.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

Another policeman was wounded in this mine blast, said Mr. Jumazada.

The southern Kandahar and Ghazni provinces are restive and the Taliban insurgents control some of districts in these two provinces.
