In a new tweet posted on Saturday, September 14, US President Donald Trump said that “the Taliban knows they made a big mistake, and they have no idea to recover!”
“The Taliban has never been hit harder than it is being hit right now. Killing 12 people, including one great American soldier, was not a good idea.” He added that there were much better ways to set up a negotiation.
Two days after a Taliban car bomb killed 12 people, including an American soldier, Trump called off the nearly a year long direct US-Taliban talks and cancelled his secret meeting with the Taliban representatives and President Ghani that were about to happen at Camp David before the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Though the Taliban expressed willingness to resume peace talks with the United State, Trump, however, reiterated that the talks with the Taliban are “dead”.
Meanwhile, Sediq Seddiqi, spokesperson for President Ghani, told reporters in a press conference on Saturday, September 14, that the government had suspended all peace efforts and prioritized convening presidential polls.
“In our belief, convening presidential election polls is the key to a legitimate peace and peace cannot be ensured without legitimacy,” he stated.
He added that peace process would be a priority for the next government.
