KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources in Nangarhar say that this afternoon (Saturday, March 28), a Taliban intelligence “Hilux” vehicle collided with a three-wheeler in Jalalabad city, causing the three-wheeler to fall into a water canal.
According to the sources, one person was killed in the incident, while two children and a woman are missing.
Sources added that another child was rescued alive from the water.
According to available information, Taliban intelligence personnel fled the scene following the incident.
Sources say that search operations are ongoing to find the missing individuals.
The Taliban governor’s office in Nangarhar has also confirmed the incident but did not mention the cause.
The office stated that the water canal has been closed to facilitate the search for the missing.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and accountability in Afghanistan, particularly involving government and security vehicles. Traffic accidents remain common across the country due to poor infrastructure, lack of enforcement of traffic laws, and reckless driving.
In many cases, victims and their families struggle to receive justice or compensation, especially when those involved are linked to authorities. Such incidents continue to raise serious questions about public safety and the responsibility of officials to protect civilians.
Traffic accidents in Afghanistan claim hundreds of lives each year and leave many more injured. Officials frequently cite reckless driving, poor road conditions, and a lack of traffic signs as key contributing factors.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the frequency of road accidents has increased sharply. Data reviewed by Etilaatroz and KabulNow show that registered traffic incidents rose from 1,187 between March 2021 and March 2022, to 2,662 the following year, and at least 5,520 between March 2023 and March 2024, representing an almost 80% increase over two years.
