Explosion in Badakhshan Mine Kills Two

KABUL, Afghanistan – Two people have died and two others were injured following an explosion at a mine in the Raghistan district of Badakhshan province, local Taliban security officials said.

The incident occurred on Monday (February 16) inside the mining site, the officials added in a statement. The deceased were residents of the Yaftal district and had come to Raghistan to work as miners.

The authorities did not provide details on the cause of the explosion.

Mining accidents, including explosions, collapses, and gas leaks, have frequently claimed the lives of miners and workers across Afghanistan. Lack of proper safety equipment and failure to follow safety protocols are cited as major contributing factors to such incidents.

Similarly, at least seven miners were killed and two others injured in a coal mine explosion in northern Samangan province nine months ago. The incident took place on May 20 in Dara-e-Suf Payin district, according to Hashmatullah Rahmani, spokesperson for the Taliban’s police command in the province. The victims’ bodies were handed over to their families, and the injured were taken to a local hospital. The cause of that explosion was also not disclosed.
