KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – In a statement released on Monday evening (January19), Emergency Hospital said that a total of 20 casualties, including seven fatalities, were transferred from the site of the blast to the hospital’s surgical department.
The hospital noted that the figures for those killed and injured are preliminary and may be revised.
Dejan Panic, the hospital’s country director in Afghanistan, said that the injured include four women and one child. He added that some of those brought to the hospital are currently being assessed for surgery.
Taliban authorities said the explosion occurred on Monday afternoon at a hotel in the Gulforoshi Alley area of Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw district.
A spokesperson for the Taliban’s Kabul police command confirmed that the blast caused casualties but did not provide further details.
Some media outlets have reported that Chinese nationals were the intended target of the attack.
No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the explosion.
