Sources say a former member of the Afghan army has been arrested by the intelligence wing of the Taliban after being deported from Iran to western Afghanistan.
A source told KabulNow that the former soldier, identified as Shirin-Del Sheida, was detained at the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province.
According to the source, Sheida is originally from Mohammad Baig village in the Dara Abdullah-Khel area of Dara district in Panjshir province. He was arrested last week, on Tuesday (December 16) shortly after crossing the border.
The source added that Sheida had been living in Iran for more than a year and held a residence permit, but was nevertheless deported to Afghanistan.
The Taliban have previously detained former security personnel returning from Iran. In some cases, reports have also emerged of the killing of former soldiers deported from neighboring countries.
The arrests and killings have continued despite the Taliban’s claims that they remain committed to a general amnesty announced by their leader.
In several reports, the United Nations has documented cases of the arrest, torture and killing of former Afghan security personnel.
