A Young Man Dies by Suicide in Helmand

Local sources in Helmand say a young man has died by suicide in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital.

According to the sources, the man identified as Atiqullah – died late on Tuesday morning (December 23). They said financial difficulties were believed to have contributed to his death.

The sources added that Atiqullah owned a currency exchange business in Lashkar Gah and had faced mounting financial problems in recent months.

Local authorities of the Taliban in Helmand have not commented on the incident so far.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, reports of suicide among young people have increased. Observers and local sources often cite despair about the future, unemployment, poverty and mental health pressures as key contributing factors.
