Reports circulating on social media allege that a 17-year-old newlywed girl named Farkhunda has died under mysterious circumstances in Kabul, prompting widespread condemnation online. However, Taliban police say she suffered a “stroke.”
Khalid Zadran, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Kabul police command, said in a statement—citing the family—that Farkhunda had a stroke two days earlier. He added that preliminary police investigations have found “no suspicious individuals,” and that the family has not filed any complaints nor accused anyone so far.
Zadran noted that the investigation into the teenager’s death is ongoing, without providing details on the nature or scope of the inquiry.
Social media users claim that Farkhunda, originally from Chah Ab district in Takhar province, was married 45 days ago to the son of Haji Ehsanullah, known locally as Haji Malang Takhari, a prominent figure in the region.
Unverified reports suggest that Farkhunda’s body was discovered in Kabul’s Gulbahar Center.
News of her death has sparked significant reaction across Afghan social media, with many calling for a transparent investigation.
