Man Kills Wife and Son in Kunar Province Amid Rising Domestic Violence

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN A man in eastern Kunar province shot and killed his wife and one of his sons, while injuring his daughter and another son, local sources confirmed.

The incident took place on Saturday in the Nurgal district. According to one source, the injured children were transferred to Nangarhar Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings point to domestic violence and economic hardship as the underlying causes.

Another source noted that the attacker may have been suffering from mental health issues.

He has since been taken into custody by Taliban authorities.

Local Taliban officials in Kunar have not yet issued a statement regarding the case.

This tragedy follows a similar incident in neighboring Kandahar province earlier in the week, where a man fatally shot his six-months-pregnant wife in Spin Boldak district.

Afghanistan has long struggled with widespread domestic violence, but rights organizations report a worsening trend since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Deepening poverty, the erosion of legal protections, and sweeping restrictions on women and girls have created conditions that enable abuse and limit access to support.
