Taliban Detains Father and Son in Panjshir as Crackdown Continues

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Taliban intelligence agents have detained a man and his son in Panjshir province, accusing them of collaborating with armed anti-Taliban groups, according to local sources.

The two civilians, identified as Noorulhaq and his son Abdullah, were detained in Dara district on Friday, May 23. They were taken from Tenkho village, where the National Resistance Front (NRF) recently launched a deadly attack on a Taliban base.

Following the NRF attack, Taliban forces reportedly surrounded the village and detained around 20 residents, accusing them of collaborating with the armed group. Several of those detained remain in custody.

Local Taliban authorities have not commented on the arrests.

Panjshir, located north of Kabul, has remained a stronghold for anti-Taliban groups such as the NRF and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF). The province has been the scene of repeated clashes and Taliban reprisals since the group returned to power in 2021.

Residents and rights groups accuse the Taliban of targeting civilians in the region. Since taking control of Panjshir, Taliban forces have detained, tortured, and killed dozens of people accused of supporting resistance groups or possessing weapons.

Amnesty International has described Taliban actions in Panjshir as war crimes. The rights group has documented widespread abuses, including unlawful detentions, collective punishment, and indiscriminate violence against civilians.
