KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front (NRF) has reported a deadly attack on the Taliban in Panjshir province, claiming to have killed 13 Taliban members and injured four others.
According to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the attack took place on Friday night, May 16, targeting a Taliban base in the Dara district. The NRF said no casualties occurred among its fighters, and no civilians were harmed.
Local sources confirmed the attack and said Taliban fighters surrounded the area afterward, detaining at least 20 residents.
Taliban authorities in Panjshir have not yet commented on the attack or the reported arrests.
The NRF is mainly made up of former Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) members and is led by Ahmad Massoud. It was formed after the US withdrawal and the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
Since then, the NRF has engaged in deadly battles with the Taliban, especially in Panjshir, Kabul, and nearby provinces. The group claims to have killed hundreds of Taliban fighters across Afghanistan in recent years.
Panjshir province, north of Kabul, is a known stronghold for anti-Taliban groups, including the NRF and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF). This has made it a focus of harsh Taliban reprisals.
Since taking control of Panjshir, the Taliban have detained, tortured, and killed many residents, accusing them of supporting armed resistance groups or possessing weapons.
