KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Taliban intelligence agents have detained two members of the former Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in central Daykundi province, local sources confirmed.
The detained individuals, identified as brothers Mohammad Ali Tofan and Mohammad Amin, were taken into custody in the Shahristan district on Wednesday, January 29.
According to sources, Mohammad Ali previously served as director of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Daikundi, while his brother, Mohammad Amin, was a soldier in Ghazni province.
The reason for their detention and their current whereabouts remain unknown. Sources also said that both men have been leading a civilian life since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
Taliban authorities in Daikundi have not commented on the detentions.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of targeted detentions, torture, and killings of former government employees and ANDSF members by the Taliban, despite the group’s public declaration of a “general amnesty” following their takeover.
In his quarterly report about Afghanistan submitted to the UN Security Council on December 12, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres documented at least five killings, 14 arbitrary arrests, and four cases of torture involving former government officials and ANDSF members between August and October 2024.
The UN and various human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the Taliban for alleged revenge killings and human rights violations, urging them to uphold the rights and freedom of all citizens of Afghanistan, including former security personnel.
