Teenage girl takes her own life in Badghis amid rising suicide rate across Afghanistan

A 17-year-old girl takes her own life by hanging herself in the Ab Kamari district of northwestern Badghis province amid soaring suicide rates across Afghanistan.

Local sources said that the young girl hanged herself in her own house in Qabchaq village on Thursday.

The spokesman of the Taliban security command in Badghis, Sediqullah Seddiqi, confirmed the incident and said that the cause of her death could be “family problems”.

Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in suicide rates since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, and depression are believed to be the key contributors to these incidents.

Last Sunday, a teenage boy committed suicide by hanging himself in central Bamyan province.

Investigative data compiled by Etilaatroz and KabulNow shows that over the past year alone, a staggering total of 110 men and 103 women committed suicides across 28 provinces.
