Teenage boy commits suicide in Bamyan amid soaring suicide rates

A 13-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the capital of central Bamyan province amid soaring suicide rates across the country.

Saboor Farzan Sighani, Taliban’s governor spokesman in the province, confirmed the incident and said the boy ended his life in the Zargaran neighborhood of Bamyan city on Saturday.

The motive behind the boy’s suicide is unclear, he added.

Suicide cases have dramatically increased in recent months throughout the country. Factors such as extreme depression, domestic violence, poverty, and unemployment are believed to be the key contributors to these incidents.

Investigative data compiled by Etilaatroz and KabulNow shows that over the past year alone, a staggering total of 110 men and 103 women committed suicides across 28 provinces.
