Taliban shuts all educational institutions in Helmand and Kandahar

The Taliban in the provinces of Helmand and Kandahar has banned all educational institutions “until further notice.”

Officials from the group’s education department in the two southern provinces via a letter ordered the closure of the institutions.

Wakil Ahmad Motavakil, a spokesperson for the Taliban’s education department in Kandahar confirmed the ban, but said it was a temporary measure.

UNICEF, Save the Children and other international organisations operate schools in Kandahar for thousands of children, which have been affected by the ban.

The Taliban has already banned girls from high schools and universities across the country.
