Issuing a statement on its Facebook page, Jamiat-e-Islami party has expressed support for the statement by a group of women’s rights activists in Kabul in which they called for closure of the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Monday. The party said the women’s stance on the UNAMA’s performance was aligned with the party’s position.
“The nature of UNAMA’s operation in Afghanistan must be seriously evaluated and its current approach should be replaced with a new operating approach,” the anti-Taliban jihadi party demanded the United Nations, accusing the UNAMA of providing a “cover-up” for the Taliban actions.
The party further noted that it’s chief, Salahuddin Rabbani, had notified the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the UNAMA’s inability and incompatibility in a letter sent to the UN chief in March.
Protesting the UN’s inability to defend women’s rights in the face of Taliban’s restrictions, a group ow women’s rights activist in a press conference in Kabul on Monday demanded the closure of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Moreover, the activists criticized the UN’s effectiveness in protecting the rights of its female employees and called on the organization to suspend its operations in Afghanistan until women are allowed to work. “Stop political engagement and suspend UNAMA operations in Afghanistan. If you can’t defend the rights of your staff, you cannot be effective.”
Women and girls are largely isolated once again to home space with the Taliban continues to impose more restrictions on women’s rights to education, work, and freedom of movement.
