EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan: Taliban recognition not on the table

The EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Tomas Niklasson, said on Thursday that recognition of the Taliban was “not on the table.”

In a Twitter thread following a three-day trip to Pakistan, where he met senior Pakistani government officials, Mr Niklasson said the Taliban’s restrictions on women “will hit Afghans most in need, in particular women and children, at the worst possible time.”

“While we do not wish to isolate Afghanistan, recognition of the Taliban regime is not on the table. We agreed on the need for the region and the broader international community to continue working together for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan.”

The Taliban government is yet to be recognised by any country. Although, some countries, including Pakistan, Russia, China and Iran, have kept close ties with the group.
