Antony Blinken and the Qatari foreign minister discuss Afghanistan

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and Qatar’s foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, discussed Afghanistan in a phone call on Saturday. “I also thanked Qatar for helping us continue to support the Afghan people,” Blinken said on Twitter.

“During the phone call, they discussed bilateral cooperation relations between the two countries, and a number of regional and international issues, especially developments in Afghanistan and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis,” Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday about the phone-talks.

Speaking to Hadley Gamble of CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Al-Thani said recently that the Taliban’s oppression of women “were very frustrating and disappointing from our point of view.”

Qatar played a key role in brokering the US-Taliban Doha deal which facilitated the US-withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 and the Taliban’s return to power.
