At least 60 dead, dozens missing as severe floods hit Nooristan province

As many as 60 have died and dozens are missing as severe flooding hit Kamdish district of the eastern Nooristan province last night, July 28, a local official confirmed.

The flooding has completely destroyed Mahrdish village of Kamdish district, said Hafiz Abdul Qayyum, governor of Nooristan province. He added that dozens are missing.

According to the governor, the local government has not sent the rescue team in the area for it is under the control of the Taliban militants. However, residents of the neighboring villages have gone to rescue those stuck in flooding and provide assistance for the victims, the local official said.

The governor noted that the casualties may rise.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Tamim Azimi, a senior official at the State Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs told Kabul Now that it is trying to manage the situation in the flood-hit area with the help of aid agencies.

He noted that they are still at the stage of negotiation to do so.
