Pres. Ghani and Khalilzad

Pres. Ghani and US envoy Khalilzad discussed next steps in peace talks

President Ghani and the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad discussed the next steps in the intra-Afghan talks in a meeting held on Monday, March 01, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

As stated in the statement, the US peace envoy has assured Ghani of the US effective role in bringing about peace to Afghanistan while expressing happiness for national, regional, and international consensus in support of the Afghan peace process.

Under the US Biden Administration, Khalilzad is on his new round of travel to Kabul, Doha, and other regional countries. On the same day, he also met the Chief of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation Abdul Abdullah.

A statement issued by the office of the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) said that Mr. Khalilzad met with Abdullah Abdullah, the chairperson of the HCNR, and discussed peace-related issues including a review of the US-Taliban peace pact.

“He will resume discussions on the way ahead with the Islamic Republic and Afghan leaders, Taliban representatives, and regional countries whose interests are best served by the achievement of a just and durable political settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire,” the US State Department said in a media note issued on February 28 about Khalilzad’s travel to Afghanistan and the region.
