Karzai urges US to resume peace talks with Taliban

Speaking at a press conference in Kabul, today, September 19, former President Hamid Karzai urged the government of the United States to resume peace talks with the Taliban.

He stressed that the talks should be transparent, clear, and for purpose peace in Afghanistan.

The former president also urged the Taliban to prioritize talks with the Afghan people rather than holding talks with the US government and foreigners.

“The Taliban must understand that they cannot govern Afghanistan and own its land by reaching a deal with the United States,” Karzai stated. He added that intra-Afghan dialogue is the only path that leads to peace in Afghanistan.

Karzai’s remarks come days after US President Donald Trump declared the nearly a year long direct US-Taliban peace talks as “denad.”
