Local Figure Shot Dead in Central Afghanistan Amid Surge in Mysterious Killings

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A local figure was shot dead by an unidentified gunman inside his home in Afghanistan’s central Daikundi province on Friday evening, local sources told KabulNow, amid a recent surge in mysterious killings and other violent crimes across the country.

The sources identified the victim as Ghulam Mohammad, an elder from the Ghochan area of Shahristan district. He was killed at around 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30.

According to the sources, the gunman opened fire through the window of Ghulam Mohammad’s room, shooting him twice while he was praying. No other members of his family were injured in the attack.

The motive behind the attack and the identities of those responsible remain unknown. Sources said Ghulam Mohammad had no known personal disputes with anyone and no history of military or political activities.

Local Taliban authorities have not commented on the incident. Sources said Taliban forces later took several residents of the area away for questioning.

The incident is the latest in a growing number of reported killings and violent crimes in different parts of Afghanistan in recent months. A week earlier, a young man identified as Hassan Khudai was shot dead by armed assailants inside his shop in Khadir district of Daikundi. The motive in that case, as in most similar incidents, remains unclear.

While Taliban authorities claim they have restored security across the country since returning to power in August 2021, the growing reports of mysterious killings and other violent crimes continue to raise questions about public safety and the authorities’ ability to protect civilians, investigate crimes and hold those responsible accountable.
