KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Khalid Zadran, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Kabul, says preliminary investigations indicate that Freshta Emady, an employee of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), died by suicide.
Writing on X on Sunday, June 7, Zadran said that the final results would be shared after forensic examinations and other investigations are completed.
He added that “other rumors circulating in some media outlets are not true.”
Following reports about the killing of Freshta Emady in Kabul, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued a statement on Friday confirming her death, but did not disclose the cause.
UNAMA extended its condolences to Emady’s family and called for respect for their privacy during this difficult time.
However, a source who is in contact with one of Emady’s colleagues told KabulNow that her husband has been pursued on suspicion of involvement in her death. According to the source, Emady lost her life as a result of domestic violence and family disputes.
The source also said that one of Amadi’s colleagues rejects claims that she suffered from mental health problems.
The exact circumstances and cause of death of the UN employee in Kabul remain unclear. According to sources, the results of the forensic examination have not yet been finalized.
The case has drawn public attention because of conflicting accounts surrounding Amadi’s death. While Taliban authorities say preliminary findings point to suicide, other sources have raised allegations of domestic violence, underscoring the importance of an independent and transparent investigation to establish the facts and clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.
UNFPA, the UN agency dedicated to sexual and reproductive health and rights, continues to operate across Afghanistan despite significant challenges. The agency supports health facilities, maternal care programs, and protection initiatives, particularly targeting women and girls amid the country’s ongoing health and humanitarian crisis.
