UN Confirms Death of Local Female Staff Member in Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed the death of Freshta Emady, a female staff member of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and expressed condolences to her family and colleagues.

In a statement posted on social media on Friday, UNAMA said it was “mourning the loss” of Emady, describing her as a valued member of the UNFPA team who contributed to the organization’s work in Afghanistan.

“She will be greatly missed,” the mission said, extending “heartfelt condolences” and urging respect for the privacy of her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

UNAMA has not disclosed any details regarding the circumstances, timing, or location of her death.

Unverified reports circulating on social media suggest Emady was killed in Kabul, but these claims have not been independently confirmed by official sources. No information has been released about possible suspects or motives, and the Taliban authorities have yet to comment on the incident.

UNFPA, the UN agency dedicated to sexual and reproductive health and rights, continues to operate across Afghanistan despite significant challenges. The agency supports health facilities, maternal care programs, and protection initiatives, particularly targeting women and girls amid the country’s ongoing health and humanitarian crisis.
