Land Dispute Leaves Three Dead in Northern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – At least three people have been killed in a dispute over land in northern Afghanistan’s Kunduz province, local Taliban authorities say.

The Taliban’s provincial police command said in a statement that the incident took place on Sunday (February 1) in the Dasht Abadan area of Dasht-e-Archi district, near a public highway. According to a statement, the victims were allegedly shot and killed by their cousins following a long-running dispute over land ownership.

The police command did not provide further details about the circumstances of the killings but confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The detainees have reportedly been handed over to Taliban judicial authorities after preliminary investigations.

Land-related disputes are a persistent source of violence in Afghanistan, particularly in rural areas where formal land registration systems are weak or non-existent. Decades of conflict, mass displacement, and overlapping claims to property have further complicated land ownership, often leaving disputes to be resolved through informal or tribal mechanisms.
