KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed anti-Taliban group, said it launched a rocket attack on a Taliban compound in northern Takhar province, killing two Taliban members.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the AFF said the strike took place on Thursday night in Khwaja Bahauddin district and targeted the house of former local uprising commander Abdul Malik Tatar, which the Taliban had seized following their return to power.
The group said two Taliban members were killed, while the number of injured remains unknown.
Taliban authorities in Takhar have not commented on the attack.
Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, several armed resistance groups have formed across Afghanistan. The AFF and the National Resistance Front (NRF) are among the most active, operating mainly in northern provinces and around Kabul. These groups are largely composed of former Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) members continue their guerrilla-style attacks against Taliban positions, checkpoints, and vehicles.
The Taliban authorities do not comment on the claims and attacks from these armed groups, seemingly attempting to downplay their impact.
However, in his latest report to the UN Security Council earlier this month, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that although armed resistance groups pose no significant challenge to the Taliban, they remain active and continue to launch attacks. According to the report, the groups claimed responsibility for 47 attacks between May and July, 19 of which were verified by the UN.
