Taliban Clash with Pakistani Border Guards in Southern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Taliban fighters and Pakistani border guards clashed on Thursday in the Bahramcha district of Helmand province, local sources reported.

The exchange of gunfire began around 9:00 a.m. on May 29, according to eyewitnesses. The confrontation reportedly started when Taliban forces were transporting two containers to newly established outposts and came under fire from Pakistani troops.

There are no confirmed reports of casualties or damages so far. The clash has since subsided, and the situation remains tense.

Neither Taliban nor Pakistani officials have issued statements regarding the incident.

This is the latest in a series of skirmishes between Taliban and Pakistani forces since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. In a similar incident last year, fighting between the two sides led to the closure of the Torkham border crossing for nearly a month, halting both passenger travel and commercial trade.

In September, a deadly clash between Afghanistan’s Khost province and Pakistan’s Kurram district left at least 16 Taliban fighters dead and 27 others wounded.

Tensions have frequently flared along the disputed Durand Line, with Taliban attempts to establish checkpoints often prompting retaliatory action from Pakistani forces.
