KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Three local journalists were injured Wednesday as clashes erupted between Taliban and Pakistani forces at the Torkham crossing, according to local sources.
The journalists, affiliated with Shamshad TV, Pajhwok Afghan News, and Omid Radio, were wounded in mortar shelling from the Pakistani side, sources said. Shamshad TV and Pajhwok Afghan News confirmed the injuries of their reporters but have not provided further details on their conditions.
Neither the Taliban nor Pakistani officials have commented on the incident.
Earlier in the day, heavy fighting broke out near the border, with both sides exchanging fire using light and heavy weapons, local sources reported.
The skirmishes come amid escalating tensions over the Taliban’s attempt to build a new border post, a move Pakistan opposes. The fighting, now in its third day, has already resulted in casualties. Two days ago, one Taliban fighter was killed, and another was wounded in a previous exchange of fire.
The unrest has also led to the closure of the Torkham crossing, a key trade and transit route between the two neighbors, leaving thousands of trucks stranded on both sides of the border.
