Local sources in the Sheberghan capital of Jowzjan province said that a woman sustained injuries and her newborn was killed in the city when unknown gunmen opened fire at them on Monday.
Taliban officials in the province have confirmed the incident.
Abdul Sattar Halimi, Taliban’s security spokesperson in Jowzjan, said that the incident took place at 1 pm in Sehshanbe village when unknown assailants shot the woman and her 40 days old infant.
The motive behind the incident is unclear, but an investigation is underway, Halimi added.
No suspect has been arrested so far.
