The Taliban has publicly flogged a man and woman in the Jabal Saraj district of Parwan province, local sources have confirmed.
A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told KabulNow that the Taliban had accused the couple, both under 30, of having a relationship outside of marriage. And the group’s local court had sentenced them to flogging in public, which was enacted on Wednesday in front of a large crowd.
The Taliban’s district governor of Jabal Saraj, Abdulma’ruf Haqjo, confirmed the sentence and said the couple had been arrested for having a relationship. “The implementation of Sharia punishments is one of the obligations of the Islamic system and prevents corruption and vice.” Haqjo said.
The Taliban Supreme Court said on May 4 that it had issued issued 175 qisas, 37 stoning and four sentences of knocking down a wall on the convicts since the group’s return to power.
The UN and human rights organisations have condemned the Taliban’s use corporal punishments.
