Although the reason behind the boy’s suicide remains unknown, Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in suicide rate since the Taliban’s return to power, especially among women and girls, who have subjected to severe restrictions by the group.

Widespread poverty, unemployment and domestic abuse have been among some of the factors for the rise in suicide in Afghanistan.
