We will not give up on our Helmand River water rights, says Iranian Foreign Minister

Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, says that Iran will not give up on its water rights over the Helmand River.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said in tweet in Persian on Monday that in meeting with the Taliban Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Samarkand on April 13, he emphasised on Iran’s water rights.

“In my recent discussion with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the interim Afghan government in Samarkand, we discussed the issue of Iran’s water rights over Helmand River in detail. Afghanistan also reaffirmed its commitment. And we agreed on some immediate actions. We will not give up on Iran’s water rights.”

During their meeting in Samarkand, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that the Taliban was not doing enough to fulfill Afghanistan’s commitment to Iran.

Iran’s water rights over the Helmand River have long been a point of dispute between the two countries. In a treaty signed in 1973, Afghanistan committed to the flow of twenty-two cubic meters per second into Iran. But Iran has long complained about the commitment not being fulfilled.
