Roof collapse kills seven members of a family in eastern Afghanistan

Seven members of a single family were killed and a child was wounded after the roof of their house, harmed by recent earthquakes and rainfalls, collapsed on Friday when all the family members were asleep underneath. The incident took place in Afghanistan’s eastern Laghman province.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Taliban’s disaster’s management department in Laghman, Khair Mohammad Ghazi, said that the roof collapsed on Friday around 02:00 AM local time when all members of the family were sleeping inside their house in Alishing district of the province.

A couple with their five children were killed and an eight-year-old girl was wounded as a result of the incident, he detailed.

The eastern Laghman, Nangarhar, and Kunar provinces have been hit by several earthquakes over the past few months.

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck areas in eastern Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan with tremors felt as far as in New Delhi, capital of India, in March. The earthquake left five dead, 58 others wounded, and destroyed 665 houses in Afghanistan, according to the United Nations.

Additionally, Afghanistan witnessed heavy rainfalls over the past few days which further weakened foundations of the muddy and poorly constructed houses in the country.
