Michael McCaul: Afghan women left under Taliban rule will not be forgotten

The US House of Representatives Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, held a meeting yesterday with former Afghan Ambassador to Washington, Roya Rahmani, to address the pressing issue of the worsening situation of Afghan women.

“The 1st female Afghan ambassador to the US, Ambassador Rahmani’s presence serves as a reminder to President Biden and our nation that the women and girls left under Taliban rule will not be forgotten,” the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority tweeted after the meeting.

A recent report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) to the US Congress revealed that the Taliban regime has systematically excluded women from public life, effectively placing half of the country’s population under house arrest.

According to SIGAR, the Taliban’s institutionalized abuse of women raises a crucial question for policymakers: can the US continue to provide aid to Afghanistan without supporting the Taliban regime?
