Taliban foreign minister meets UN deputy chief; no promise on lifting women ban

The UN deputy general secretary, Amina Mohammed, met with the Taliban foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Kabul Wednesday.

The Taliban foreign ministry spokesperson, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, said on Twitter that the group’s foreign minister asked Amina Mohammed and the UN delegation, which includes the head of the UN Women, Sima Bahous, to “portray Afghanistan’s true picture to the international community.”

The Taliban foreign minister, according to Abdul Qahar Balkhi, listed the group’s grievances, which included non-recognition and sanctions on its leaders, asking for “positive steps by the international community.”

The UN deputy general secretary, Balkhi said, “pledged to convey the realities as witnessed to the international community, taking firm steps for continued assistance to Afghanistan.” The group has not said anything about the issue of women being banned from working as aid workers, which has taken the UN delegation to Kabul.
