KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A young man who recently returned from Pakistan was shot dead by unknown armed assailants in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, local sources said, amid a sharp increase in mysterious killings across the country.
The victim, identified as Sajid Khan, was killed in Rodat district on Thursday, September 10, the sources said.
Khan was a school student who had recently returned to Afghanistan with his family from Pakistan, according to the sources.
The motive for the killing and the identity of the perpetrators remain unknown. Local Taliban authorities have not commented on the incident.
The killing is the latest in a series of mysterious deaths reported across Afghanistan in recent months. Since the beginning of September, at least nine such cases have been reported in different parts of the country, involving teenage boys and girls as well as young and elderly men.
While the Taliban administration maintains that it has restored nationwide security since returning to power in 2021, residents, civil society activists and rights groups continue to express concern over the protection of civilians. They point to the absence of independent investigations and the lack of accountability for those responsible for such attacks.
