Ghani calls on int’l community to guarantee sustainable peace in Afghanistan

The international community must guarantee a sustainable peace in Afghanistan, President Ghani said while addressing a gathering of tribal elders and religious scholars on Monday, April 05.

“Our goal is to have an independent, democratic, and united Afghanistan and there must be no interruption,” a statement issued by the Presidential Palace quoted Ghani as saying. President Ghani described the Afghanistan constitution as a national charter, the statement noted.

“The world stands with us, we achieve the peace and must move forward with rationality and prudence,” Ghani was quoted as saying.

The remark comes ahead of the upcoming peace conference to be hosted by Turkey. Officials of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban leadership will attend the conference to discuss a political settlement.

On Sunday, April 04, the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) said in a statement that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will attend the Istanbul conference with a single proposal and a team of the Council is currently busy reviewing nearly 30 proposals, including the US and that of President Ghani.

Reuters reported on Sunday that President Ghani will propose a three-phase peace road for Afghanistan in the upcoming conference in Turkey.

The three-phase peace road map includes a consensus on a political settlement with the Taliban, an internationally monitored ceasefire before elections, implementation of political arrangements to lay the foundation of a new system called the government of peace, and developing a “constitutional framework, reintegration of refugees and development.”
