Explosion rips through mosque in Herat, killing and wounding dozens of Taliban

At least 20 Taliban militants, including their commanders, were killed or wounded after a blast ripped through a mosque in Pashtun Zarghon district of Herat where the Taliban had gathered, Herat governor, Sayed Abdul Wahid Qatali, said.

The incident took place in Marabad village when the Taliban had come together to make suicide vests and roadside bombs, said a statement issued by the office of the governor today, Sunday, April 25. The militant group mainly used the mosque as a depot and was planning to launch attacks in Herat city.

The Taliban, however, have not commented regarding the incident.

In recent months, the Taliban have increased their sporadic attacks against Pashtun Zarghon district which lies to the east of Herat city.

The Taliban militants control swaths of territories in the district.
