Abdullah Abdullah, the chairperson of Afghan High Council for National Reconciliation, on Sunday, October 18, left Kabul for Tehran on a two day official visit to discuss bilateral ties and Afghan peace process with top Iranian leaders including President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, and speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
Leading a high level peace delegation, Mr. Abdullah, in the capacity of chairperson of High Council for National Reconciliation, visits Tehran for the first time to seek a regional consensus on Afghan peace process which is underway in Doha, Qatar.
The chairperson of High Council for National Reconciliation visited Islamabad on late September and New Delhi on early October to consolidate a regional consensus on Afghan peace.

Located in the west of the country, Iran shares 921 km long border with Afghanistan.
On September 12, when for the first time in 19 years, the Afghan government and Taliban inaugurated the opening ceremony of peace negotiations in Doha, Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, was expected to speak on the occasion via Skype but Mr. Zarif did not appear. Iran’s diplomats, however, have expressed that Tehran would support a peaceful political settlement between the Afghan government and the Taliban militant group.
